An Introduction to the Bloomsbury Group

Virginia Woolf is always immediately associated with ‘The Bloomsbury Group’, but who exactly were the Bloomsbury Group? Why did they come together? And why does this group still attract attention today, over eighty years after its heyday?
Claire Nicholson (Anglia Ruskin University) will introduce you to this fascinating group of artists, writers and thinkers of the early twentieth century, who came together as an informal circle of friends and went on to play an influential role in English cultural life. This illustrated talk will be approximately 50 minutes, followed by an opportunity for questions. Tea and cake will then be served.

The setting for this event could not be more appropriate as Virginia Woolf visited the Orchard and was a friend of the young poet Rupert Brooke, who lived there.
You may like to come to the Orchard before the talk to visit the Rupert Brooke Museum, which houses an interesting collection of photographs and memorabilia telling the story of Rupert Brooke’s life and his connections with the Bloomsbury Group. The museum is open 11.00am – 4.00pm and has postcards, books and other souvenirs for sale.
